A theory: The Range Rover Sport Supercharged is the best all around car ever made.

Still not as good as the proper Range Rover

Hear me out.

In order for a car/truck/vehicle/whatever to win this imaginary award, it must be all of the following:

Fast

Comfortable

Off-road capable

Capable of towing over 7k lbs

Practical

Decent at cornering

I’m ignoring fuel economy, price, and reliability, because if those things are a problem for you the n you should’ve worked harder, you lazy rube.

Let’s go through the items that the RRS s/c definitely satisfies. With over 500bhp and a 0-60 time of under 5 seconds, it’s fast. With a luxurious interior and air suspension, it’s comfortable. It’s a Range Rover, so while it’s no Wrangler it’s still very off-road capable, especially with some decent tires. It’s got a tow rating of 7716 lbs. It’s practical, with a big cargo area and fold-down rear seats.

The one item that is somewhat questionable is the cornering. While it is still an SUV, every review I’ve read has said that the RRS corners remarkably well for an SUV. Top Gear found that it was faster round Donnington than a Mini Cooper JCW.

I’ve been racking my mind, and I can’t think of any other vehicle that satisfies all of these requirements better than the Range Rover Sport Supercharged. And I don’t even like the thing all that much.

Don’t you dare bring my Mini Gp into this. The range  was faster by .1 (right?)

It was very close. And of course it’s Top Gear, so you have to take it with a grain of salt.

Jack of all trades, master of none.

Cost and p ossible reliability issues aside, I still wouldn’t buy one. Too big, too heavy, too tall.

Agreed. I still think it’s an interesting question though.

A GTI and a modestly equipped pickup will come in at about the same cost, be more reliable, and combined do everything better.

Exactly! And if you don’t need the heavy duty towing or off ro ad capabilities (often) you could even skip that truck al together.

The RRS is popular with the range rover faithful overland crowd for its combination of LR4 robustness and Range rover style.  Im not saying I would buy one myself but of all the current model Rangies its by far the best choice for dirty work.

Nope. The 3rd gen Camry is the best car ever made :o)

Any car with name “Rover” in it is a piece of shit :(

Or for people on a more modest budget... Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited+Tech and Off-road packages, or Overland (quadralift standard, tech and trail-rated off-road Adventure 2 package optional)

Granted... it has significantly less power in V6 trim, and still markedly less in Hemi 5.9 trim, and a bit less towing... but it also costs significantly less, and can be serviced at a much wider dealer network.

My 14 Overland V6 still gets up and moves well enough in traffic, even though it is no speed demon. I wondered if it would without the Hemi, but it does pretty well with the 8-speed gearbox. I don’t pretend it is a performance car.

It lowers itself to Aero height at speed, it raises automatically to normal, at lower speeds, and also has a low entry-exit mode, and two higher than normal off-road modes... with 18" wheels and off-road tires, (rather than 20" all-season M+S tires) and skid plate package, it can be trail-rated.

A 14-15' looks just like a new one (takes a keen eye to tell the grille details apart from the newer model years) and mine with ~60K miles with documented maintenance and the advanced tech package with lane blindspot warnings, parking distance, adaptive cruise (love that more than I thought I would), and slightly wonky auto-high beam headlights was less than $30K less than a year ago.

Summit is even more luxurious and slightly less off-road ready, with SRT-like looks, Limited starts at lower prices with less equipment standard than Overland, but still nicely equipped, and very capable.

And if you do think you need performance in a practical vehicle... SRT8 and Trackhawk do exist... I guess I’d rather have another sporty car, or a motorcycle or something, in addition to the Overland.

The spouse LOVES it... big double-panel moonroof, heated and cooled front seats, leather dash, good infotainment and partial digital-dash...

A small oil pressure sensor replacement, adjusting the spring tension on the air deflector to allow the moonroof to close without assistance , and slightly odd high-beam headlight behavior are the only things that haven’t been 100% since we bought it... and I just switch over to manual headlight control, if I drive significantly at night... the headlights work fine... the computer just is odd about when it chooses to dim, and when it doesn’t. Probably needs to have the camera and both self-leveling suspension and headlight  aims aligned or something.

7000 pounds of towing seems high as a threshold for the discussion . I would argue something like a higher trim Macan, on paper, offers much better driving credentials, a still decent 4500lb tow rating; and I’m guessing with the right tires and the optional height adjusting suspension it  would do respectably off road.

Yeah I think a top trim M acan is the correct choice
